What Is Brazing?

Understanding Brazing for Strong and Durable Assemblies

Brazing is a widely used technique, especially for joining joints or thin sections (tubing, walls, etc.) where risks of deformation, overheating, or burning are high in welding. Brazing involves only melting the filler metal, whose melting point is always lower than that of the base metals.

This process is one of the most cost-effective due to its simplicity, speed, and potential for mass production, mechanization, or automation.

Why Choose Brazing?

Brazing offers several advantages:

  • ✅ No dilution of the base metal
  • ✅ Reduced risk of hot cracking in joints
  • ✅ Ability to join similar or dissimilar materials (e.g., ceramic/metal, composite)
  • ✅ Process does not require advanced qualifications for the operator

Principles of Brazing

Brazing involves joining two materials using a filler metal with a melting point lower than the materials being joined. Capillarity plays a key role: the liquid filler metal infiltrates between the surfaces to be joined, creating metallurgical continuity.

  • Ideal gap: For good capillarity, the gap between surfaces should be a few hundredths of a millimeter (or thousandths of an inch).

Surface Preparation

To ensure good infiltration of the filler metal:

  • Surfaces must be clean and free of contaminants or oxides.
  • A flux is often necessary, available in cream, liquid, paste, powder form, or directly integrated into brazing rods.

Role of Flux

Flux is essential to:

  • ✔️ Remove oxides from the surface of the base metal
  • ✔️ Improve wetting of the filler metal
  • ✔️ Protect against oxidation of the heated base metal and liquid filler metal

Why Brazing Is an Effective Solution?

Brazing is ideal for:

  • ✅ Joining materials of different natures
  • ✅ Preserving part integrity with a lower working temperature than welding
  • ✅ Ensuring good mechanical strength and optimal sealing
  • ✅ Avoiding distortions caused by high thermal stresses
