Removing cracks and repairing joints on cast iron : A comprehensive guide

Removing Cracks and Repairing Joints on Cast Iron

Maintaining the integrity of weldable cast iron components requires precise techniques for removing cracks and repairing joints. This process is crucial for ensuring durable repairs and prolonging the life of your cast iron parts.

Steps for Removing Cracks in Cast Iron

  1. Visual Inspection
Use non-destructive testing methods, such as dye penetrant inspection (DPI) or magnetic particle inspection (MPI), to visualize the limits or ends of the crack.
  2. Drilling Holes
Drill a hole with a minimum diameter of 1/4″, depending on the thickness of the metal. The holes should be approximately 3/8 to 1/2″ from the visible limit of the crack.
  3. Removing the Crack
Create a bevel around the crack, removing metal in two segments:
    • From one end of the crack to the midpoint.
    • From the other end to the first prepared segment.
  4. Preparing the Bevel
Round the edges and the bottom of the bevel to create a U or J shape instead of a V shape.
  5. Final Inspection
Use the same non-destructive inspection method to ensure the crack is completely removed from the edges and bottom of the bevel.

Repair Techniques for Joints

  • Tool Selection
Favor arc gouging over air arc and use tapered rotary burrs or chisels to avoid creating gouges in the metal.
  • Removing Hardened Surface Layer
Remove a hardened surface layer of 1/16 to 1/8″ from the sides of the preparation.

Welding or Filling Sequence for the Bevel

  1. Applying Buttering
Apply one or two thin layers of buttering on the bevel faces before starting the filling process to reduce stresses and prevent cracking.
  2. Depositing Weld Beads
Start welding from the end of the bevel towards the center, using small, straight, and discontinuous beads to fill the joint.
