Magnesium

Magnesium is the lightest metallic element. Density is about 2/3 of the aluminum. The additional elements like Al, Mn, Zn and Zr contribute to increase the mechanical resistance of the alloy. Also shaped by casting or by welding processes, the aluminum alloys hardened by precipitation or cold deformation have an excellent mechanical resistance according to it density.

Like aluminum, the magnesium has a weak fusion point, which is 648°C, a high thermal dilatation coefficient and thermal conductivity. It has also been also very reactive to oxygen, the metal forms a magnesium oxide (MgO) protective layer which is very stable on the surface; which protects it from corrosion.
