Titanium is a lightweight metal with a density of 4.5g/cm3. It forms a stable oxide layer which gives it its interesting properties of oxidation and corrosion resistance.

Commercially pure (CP) titanium, grade 1 to 4, has a superior corrosion resistance but their mechanical strength level is moderate. Indeed, the latter are mainly used in the chemical industry, architecture, power plants (heat exchangers), marine sector and the biomedical industry (medical implants).

Moreover, these unalloyed grades of titanium have a good weldability due to their satisfactory ductility. Plasma and TIG are the most suitable welding processes to weld titanium. Other advanced processes, ie, LASER or electron beam welding are also used. The high electrical resistivity of the material makes it readily weldable by resistance welding.
