Magnesium

APPLICATIONS & WELDING

With its low density, the magnesium finds applications in several industries. Magnesium and its alloys possess also a good atmospheric corrosion resistance and also a good mechanical resistance. Their weldability is considered good with the appropriate processes : flame, TIG and MIG (preferred for high thickness). Some precautions will also need to be taken :

  • Surface preparation : taking out all contaminants and especially the oxide layer to minimize welding defaults.
  • Preheating : a necessary step for some alloys and flanged assemblies in order to reduce the cracking risks.
