Cast Iron

Cast iron is essentially an iron based economical alloy that contains more than 2% of carbon, 1 to 3% of silicon and up to 1% of manganese with other traces of sulfide and dephosphore. Sometimes, they are alloyed with chromium, nickel, copper, molybdenum, vanadium or other elements, to increase wear resistance, corrosion or at high temperatures. Different cast iron types exist and the differentiation is in their chemical composition and / or the thermal treatment : white cast iron, grey cast iron, ductile cast iron, malleable cast iron and wormlike. Hypoeutectic alloys (<4.3%C) are rich in silicon have better flowability. Not all the cast irons are weldable. Also, particular precautions are required for known weldable alloys.
